- Coverage may not be denied due to illness,
provided the applicant is eligible.
- Should life changes related to family or unemployment
arise, more opportunities for group coverage may be available.
- A new employer may require a wait period prior to coverage.
- Providers may review medical history for the six months
previous to coverage.
- In the case of a pre-existing condition, the provider
may require an exclusion period, the lengths of which vary according
to type of coverage.
- Group plans may impose a waiting period for health conditions.
- If coverage is maintained continuously for nine months
through a small employer or for three months through a similar
plan, creditable coverage may be awarded.

Individual Health Insurance in Washington
- Individual health coverage can be denied
based on health problems.
- Those refused coverage may apply for Washington State
Health Insurance Pool.
- Some instances require a provider to offer insurance coverage.
- Newborn, adopted, and disabled children may have special
coverage opportunities.
- Coverage may be denied if a provider has its maximum number
of enrollees.
- For pre-existing conditions, the maximum exclusion period
is nine months.
- Pregnancy may be considered a pre-existing condition.
- Credit for prior coverage may apply to exclusion periods.
- Those without insurance coverage for 63 days or more may
be subjected to a nine month exclusion period.
- Premium prices may not be based on health but determined
by adjusted community rating.
- Coverage cannot be cancelled due to illness.
