Student Health Insurance Coverage
Student health insurance policies
are probably advertised to you every time you turn around. Your
dorm mailbox is overflowing with offers, your parents are bombarded,
and advertisements are all over campus and local billboards. If
you are purchasing student health insurance for yourself or a
student in your family, take care to assess your or your student's
particular needs and keep them in mind while comparing prices
and options.
Coverage under a family member’s policy may
no longer be applicable if the student is above a certain age.
However, it never hurts to try. Many policies cover dependent
individuals as long as they are under the age of 24 and are full-time students. Check your provider for details. If you can cover
your student for less under student coverage, drop him or her
from the group insurance.

Injuries and illnesses are a matter of course for
most college students and the financial means to cover these expenses
is not usually readily available. Tuition is expensive and an
emergency or tough illness may be all it takes to ruin your finances.
Prevent this from happening by finding the right student
health insurance for you. Rates
for a good student health insurance policy are far more reasonable
than the exorbitant fees charged by hospitals and clinics, especially
in a college town. Protect yourself, your finances, and those
you love, and be prepared.
School Health Insurance Options for Students
All schools offer insurance options for their students.
They usually choose a group plan with a variety of services. These
services will vary from school to school and will usually be performed
at the school’s health center. Unlike other group plans,
visits to the health center are usually free. Often routine work
including x-rays, labs, small emergencies, and screenings are
free or very low cost as well. If you choose to take advantage
of the school’s policy, do so at the beginning of the school
year. It may not be available at the beginning or the end of the
year. Also, be sure that your student is covered over vacation
and off campus.
