Self-Directed Health (SDHP) Plans
A self directed health plan (SDHP) combines aspects
of a PPO plan with those of a Self Directed Account (SDA). The
Self Directed Plan is funded when a member pays the maximum quarterly
allowance and yearly balance. This money is used for medical,
health, and wellness, and preventive care services. Any money
invested in the account that is not spent on health care is rolled
over to the following year. This allows members to save money
to pay for medical costs.
Self directed health plans have high deductibles.
Inpatient surgery and emergency room visits are not covered by
an SDHP, but the member’s plan covers what is not paid for
by the high deductible. Prescription drugs are covered by pharmaceutical
benefits. Members may see the physician of their choice, but lower
costs are available for approved medical providers within the
network.

Some preventative care services that may be covered
by a self-directed health plans include consultations, physicals,
well baby check ups, women’s annual check ups, office visits,
home visits, immunizations, and x-rays.
Self-Directed Health Plans are ideal for those who
do not need regular health care beyond the usual check ups. Those
who don’t visit the doctor’s office often benefit
from an SDHP because this plan allows its members to have health
insurance but not to overpay for services that they don’t
need.
