Prescription Drug (PDP) Plans
Prescription plans may be included as a benefit
by any HMO, PPO, POS, or other group system. Prescription plans
lower the cost of prescription drugs for the member.
A large organization, which a member belongs to
through their health coverage, contracts a prescription drug vendor.
The vendor works with pharmacies across the country. The pharmacies
manufacture large volumes of prescription drugs making it easy
to offer discounts.
The PPO gives a medical I.D. card to each member
with a list of drugs. The member takes all prescriptions to pharmacy
within the network that recognizes the I.D.. The pharmacist fills
the member’s prescription with a generic form of the drug
if possible and if not, then the more expensive preferred brand
will be used.
Members are encouraged to request preferred drugs,
as some of them require pre-authorization for use and may have
a refill reduction requirement each time it is filled. It is the
responsibility of the member to be knowledgeable about which drugs
are covered.
