  • If eligible for group health insurance, no one will be denied or charged more because of illness.
  • Family problems, children, marriage, and job changes may affect group health insurance opportunities.

  • Regulations on individual health insurance vary.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan may not deny applications for individual health policies.
  • Other insurance companies may deny an applicant due to health problems.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield may not impose exclusion periods based on pre-existing conditions if the applicant is HIPAA eligible.
  • For those not HIPAA eligible, regulations vary.
  • For HMOs and Blue Cross Blue Shield, no exclusion period may exceed six months.
  • Other insurance providers may impose an exclusion period for up to 12 month based on pre-existing conditions.
  • All insurance providers may only review medical records for the six months immediately preceding acceptance of individual coverage.
