Based in San Francisco, Blue Shield Of California (also known as California Physicians' Service) offers health insurance services to over 2.5 million Californians. As a non profit organization, Blue Shield of California offers health insurance products like HMOs, preferred provider organization (PPOs), dental plans, and a Medicare supplemental plan. Accidental death and dismemberment, executive medical reimbursement, life insurance, vision, and short-term health plans are offered by Blue Shield of California Life & Health Insurance subsidiary. Blue Shield of California is a member of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
With 3.2 million policy holders, Blue Shield of California is the third largest health plan provider in the state. Founded in 1939, Blue Shield of California has grown to include 20 offices throughout California. Their parent company is California Physicians' Service and they received an ‘Excellent’ rating for service and clinical quality by the NCQA. They also received an A- (excellent) rating from AM Best and an A- (strong financial security) rating from Standard and Poors.
